Incoterms are rules of the International Chamber of Commerce that define, in three letters, who pays what, where risk passes and who handles each formality in an international sale. The current edition is 2020, with 11 rules. They do not govern ownership or payment.
Seven rules work for any mode (EXW, FCA, CPT, CIP, DAP, DPU, DDP) and four only for sea or inland waterway (FAS, FOB, CFR, CIF). They are contractual: they apply only if the contract cites them, with edition and place (“FCA Barcelona, Incoterms 2020”).
