After 4.5 hours of driving the driver must take a break of at least 45 minutes. It may be split into two parts: 15 minutes first, then 30, in that order. During a break the driver may neither drive nor do other work.
For the planner, the break is what decides how many real kilometres fit in a day. A 9-hour driving day needs two breaks, and loading or unloading does not count as a break if the driver is working during it.
