The tachograph records, minute by minute, what the driver is doing: driving, other work, availability or rest. Vehicles subject to Regulation 561/2006 must carry one, and the driver logs in with a personal card. Current versions are digital and record position too.
Records are downloaded periodically and kept at the company; roadside inspections read them on the spot. For the transport manager, the tachograph is both the control tool and the source of penalties: a time infringement is proven with its data.
